PANiC Stations Campaign

People Against New Coal Stations.

What we are doing now

Having defeated the proposal to build a monster 6,000,000 tonne per year coal burning power station we will now campaign for sensible 'green' development at the site, bringing jobs, environmental benefits and making good use of an excellent industrial potential for off shore wind development, or other jobs, as part of the 'green' regeneration of this area. Cambois / Blyth has been blighted by the failure of RWE/N-Power to utilise the site following the demolition of the power station over ten years ago. Indeed the company could not even be bothered to undertake a complete demopition, clearance and re-instatement of the site - leaving several half demolished structures and large amounts of rubble, ground drains without covers to prevent people or wildlife from falling in the ground drains.

So what does this mean?

We will:-

  • monitor all planning applications and land use planning matters.
  • oppose any unsuitable applications (such as fossil fuel burning power stations) for the site.
  • actively promote and support plans that will assist with the 'green' development of the site leading to regeneration, employment, community housing, and green technologies being developed on the site.
  • continue to work to support the local community associations where their aims compliment ours.
  • continue to monitor and report to the local members of the campaign on the actions of the politicians, companies and authorities on these matters.

What the locals want

The results of our survey

In 2009 we undertook a survey of the people in Cambois / Blyth and the region to find out what people thought of the proposal to build a monster Coal Fired Power Station. The survey unsurprisingly found massive opposition to the Coal Fired Power Station, but considerable demand for regeneration of the site with industrial uses. This is not another NIMBY reaction.

You can download the Survey report or look at the press release to get more details on the views of the people who live here.

What we have done to date

You can see what we have done by looking at our Press
Releases
and similar materials.

  • We have organised a succesful campaign involving media articles, on site and stree campaining actions and lobbying of the local politicians and companies involved in the potential development of the former Power Station site at Cambois / Blyth.
  • Since the companies and government bodies involved seem to have failed to do this, we have undertaken a survey of the real opinions of the people in Cambois and Blyth to find out what they want.
  • We have been part of the national campaigns against new coal power stations (coal being the most greenhouse gas poluting of the conventional power stations) and together all the campaigns have brought about a change in the national government position with regard to the development of new power stations.
  • Locally the RWE/N-Power development plans for a new coal power station at Cambois / Blyth have been shelved.

So why is this not enough?

Well shelving the plans does not actually stop the development of a new monster power station, nor does it use this excellent site for alternative energy production and jobs / development for the area, which is what our survey shows the locals want.

We will continue to monitor plans for this area, and to promote a safe sound and environmentally suitable development in the area, as requested by the locals involved in the campaign, and as demonstrated is popularly demaneded by the results of our survey.
