NEWS RELEASE, September 2009

LOCAL MP's SLAMMED BY CAMPAIGN GROUP

Local MP's were blasted by North-East environmental campaigners today for backing plans for a coal power station in the region.

Eight Tyneside and Northumberland MPs failed to address the concerns of over 70% of local residents, who want a renewable energy project on the site according to campaign group PANiC Stations (People Against New Coal Stations).
All 14 Tyneside and Northumberland MPs were asked by constituents for their support in opposing the construction of unabated coal-firec power stations at Blyth/Cambois and elsewhere.

This followed a survey in the NE in which 96% of respondents said that they wanted electricity generated by non-polluting means and over 70% wanted to use the Cambois site for a renewable energy resource.

4 MPs, Alan Beith, Stephen Byers, Jim Cousins and Denis Murphy, strongly supported the position that Carbon Capture and Storage technology should be in place before operation starts at any new coal fired power station.

2 MPs, Alan Campbell and Ronnie Campbell, prommised to question the government's proposals to build power stations with the carbon dioxide extracted from only a quarter of their emmissions.

The other MPs - David Anderson, Peter Atkinson, Nick Brown, David Celland, Doug Henderson, Stephen Hepburn, Sharon Hodgson and David Milliband - failed to address the concerns of constituents, several responding with the government's position that full carbon capture would be fitted later if it works and is economic.

Malcolm Reid from PANiC Stations said:

"These eight MPs are failing their constituents by backing these controvercial plans."

"No dangerus project that depends on unproven technology should be built before that technology can be shown to work. It is still encouraging that several thoughtful MPs have acknowledged this, as have all the North East's MEPs".
