NEWS RELEASE, November 2009
Coal Station Victory
Panic Stations (People Against New Coal Stations) correctly predicted the demise of the coal power station proposal for Cambois/ Blyth and calls for the re-designation of the site for clean, green technology and housing regeneration in the new Core Strategy for Northumberland.
On Tuesday 3rd November, 6 Cambois residents: Dorothy O’Connor, John James, Elsie Little, Brian Simpson and Rob and Brenda Weatherburn, together with Panic Stations coordinator, Malcolm Reid put the evidence to East Bedlington Parish Council that the proposed massive coal power station planned for Cambois would not go ahead in the foreseeable future. They showed photographs highlighting the dreadful conditions they face and called for support in re-designating the derelict site for clean, green technology and housing regeneration, and lifting the blight of several years on the lives of the people of Cambois.
Yesterday afternoon, 9th November, the group was joined by Carol Crossland of North Blyth to put their case to the Council Leader, Jeff Reid and Senior Officers Gordon Halliday and Paul Gee for an hour. The Council Leader listened carefully to their case and agreed to make a site visit to be arranged with John James. Strong Council representation will also be made at the East Northumberland Forum on 12th January at the Mining Institute, Cambois.
The group returned home to be greeted with the news that RWE npower has shelved their plans for the proposed power station.
The group’s reasoning had been that Blyth could not be part of a cluster of CO2 emitters, which could supply a single pipeline for CO2 storage. Blyth is far from the main electricity users and there would be significant energy losses over the long transmission distance. The grid network near Blyth has a low capacity and would require a very costly upgrade to carry the electricity of a power station with 6 times the output of the old one. Finally, Eon, the owners of the Kingsnorth, Kent site, which is the only station to have planning consent, recently announced that even their programme has been put back by 2 or 3 years.
The group also gave the Council Leader evidence from James Hansen, Director of the Nasa Goddard institute and leading climate change scientist, that coal is the worst of all contributors to global warming and climate change.
The residents today hope to win support from North Bedlington Parish Council when it meets this evening at Choppington Welfare.
